Chicken breeds are categorized into standard breeds, commercial breeds, and local breeds.

Jan 13,2026

Chicken breeds are categorized into standard breeds, commercial breeds, and local breeds. Commercial breeds are now widely raised. Standard breeds like the Orpington and Rhode Island Red serve only as breeding stock. The names of these standard breeds hold little significance for poultry farmers. Commercial chicken breeds are commodities developed and named by breeding companies, such as the Brown Leghorn and White Hy-Line. Modern commercial breeds are characterized by specialization, high production performance, and predominantly hybrid stock. They primarily derive from a few standard breeds like Leghorn, Rhode Island Red, and White Rock, though breeders rarely use these names. Consequently, poultry farmers are familiar with commercial names rather than standard designations.

Local breeds possess unique characteristics. China boasts rich local breed resources, with 27 local chicken breeds listed in the 1989 publication “Catalogue of Chinese Poultry Breeds.” These local breeds each have distinct traits and represent invaluable genetic resources. The rapid development of yellow-feathered broilers in recent years fully leverages the excellent meat quality characteristic of China's local chicken breeds. Commercial egg-laying breeds are primarily categorized into white-shelled, brown-shelled, and light brown-shelled varieties. All high-quality foreign egg-laying breeds have been introduced domestically. Popular white-shelled breeds include Hy-Line White and Leghorn White, while brown-shelled varieties encompass Hy-Line Brown, Leghorn Brown, and Hy-Sex Brown. Light brown-shelled breeds are mainly represented by Hy-Line Gray. Domestically developed high-quality egg-laying breeds include the Xinyang series and Jingbai series. These breeds exhibit solid production performance, but key factors include the source breeding farm. Variations in technical expertise and management standards among breeding farms can lead to differences in production outcomes. Therefore, breeding stock should be sourced from farms demonstrating strong technical capabilities and management practices.

Commercial Breeds of Superior Broiler Chickens

White-feathered fast-growing broilers are primarily imported breeds, such as AA broilers and Aviagen broilers. Some regions have also begun raising Ross broilers and Hubbard broilers.

Domestically, numerous (breeding lines) of yellow-feathered or colored-feathered broilers have been developed, including Jiangcun Yellow Chicken, Kangda Broiler, and Xinxing Yellow Chicken. Some regions also produce specialized chickens through crossbreeding broilers and layers, such as the Dezhou Roast Chicken. Feed-saving small-sized layers achieve this by transferring dwarf genes into high-yielding layers. These chickens are 25% smaller than standard breeds, consume 30% less feed, lay slightly smaller eggs, and achieve a 15% higher feed conversion rate. This results in over 5 yuan (approximately $0.70 USD) in additional economic benefit per bird. The profitability is even higher in regions where small eggs command premium prices.
